Your Bengali translator

Your translation is made by a translator sworn by a German court, usually a Landgericht (regional court) or Oberlandesgericht (higher regional court). The translator reads Bengali script, transliterates names and places into Latin letters and confirms with stamp and signature that the German text is complete and correct. A translator in India cannot certify a translation for German authorities.

Bengali names: long forms, short forms and the b/v question

Many Bengali surnames have two correct English forms. One is the long form, close to the Bengali spelling. The other is the short, anglicised form. মুখোপাধ্যায় is Mukhopadhyay, and many families write it as Mukherjee. চট্টোপাধ্যায় is Chattopadhyay, often written Chatterjee. Your certificate may use one form while your passport uses the other.

First names change too. Bengali script has no separate letter for the "v" sound. So বিবেক is read "Bibek", while a passport may say "VIVEK". Place names do the same: বর্ধমান is Bardhaman, but many passports still say BURDWAN.

A sworn translation must follow the document. This is how the translator works:

  1. 1The Bengali text is transliterated letter by letter, in the document's order.
  2. 2No name part is added, dropped or replaced with the short form.
  3. 3Your passport spelling goes into a translator's note, so the office can match both forms.
On your document In your passport In our translation
মুখোপাধ্যায় (your surname) Surname: MUKHERJEE Mukhopadhyay (translator's note: passport spelling MUKHERJEE)
চট্টোপাধ্যায় (father's surname) Father's name on the last page: … CHATTERJEE Chattopadhyay (translator's note: passport spelling CHATTERJEE)
বিবেক (given name) Given name: VIVEK Bibek (translator's note: passport spelling VIVEK)
বর্ধমান (place of birth) Place of birth: BURDWAN Bardhaman (translator's note: passport spelling BURDWAN)

Your Indian passport lists your father's, mother's and spouse's names on the last page. Please upload that page too. If your family uses a different form on purpose, you may already have an affidavit for a name change. We can translate it with your certificate. Whether the office asks for one is the office's decision.

Bengali documents from West Bengal and Tripura

Bengali is used in West Bengal and Tripura, and in the Barak Valley of Assam. Common documents and their typical layouts:

  • Birth certificates from municipalities and gram panchayats, often with English print and Bengali entries. Newer ones come from the national Civil Registration System (CRS). See translating your Bengali birth certificate.
  • Madhyamik (Class 10) certificates and mark sheets from the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education, Higher Secondary (Class 12) papers from the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education, and Tripura board papers. See Madhyamik, Higher Secondary and degree certificates.
  • Marriage certificates from a Marriage Registrar, or from a Kazi (Muslim marriage registrar), sometimes in Bengali only. See marriage certificate from West Bengal.

We translate everything on the page, in Bengali and English, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. If your document is fully in English, see English to German translation. For Hindi papers from other states, see Hindi to German translation.

Why do people in Germany need a Bengali translation?

The translation is one step in a bigger process. Each process has its own page:

An Indian apostille is not valid in Germany. If your office needs to check an Indian document, it asks the German Embassy in India for a verification. You cannot start this yourself. Read our document verification guide.

Frequently asked questions about Bengali to German translation

Is there a sworn Bengali translator in Germany?

Yes. German courts have sworn translators for Bengali, but fewer than for Hindi or English. We work with a partner translator sworn by a German court and confirm the delivery date before you pay.

Can my Bangla birth certificate be translated to German?

Yes. We translate the whole birth certificate from Bangla to German, including English parts, stamps and seals. The sworn translation keeps every name as written and adds your passport spelling in a note.

Will my name be written as Chatterjee or Chattopadhyay?

We write the form that is on your document. If your passport uses the other form, the translator adds it in a translator's note.

I searched for "Übersetzer Bengalisch Deutsch beglaubigt". Is that the same service?

Yes. Bengalisch is the German word for Bengali. The phrase means a sworn translation (beglaubigte Übersetzung) from Bengali into German, made by a translator sworn by a German court.

Can you translate my Madhyamik or Higher Secondary mark sheet?

Yes. We translate the full mark sheet or certificate, including subjects, marks, grades, remarks and stamps. We translate grades as printed; offices convert them themselves.

How long does a Bengali to German sworn translation take?

It depends on our partner translator's free dates. We tell you the exact date before you pay. You get a PDF first, then the signed original by post.

Will the German office accept my translation?

A sworn translation is valid throughout Germany. The office makes the final decision, so we cannot guarantee a decision.
