Single Status Certificate Translation for Marriage in Germany
Last updated: 2 October 2026
You want to marry in Germany. For the Anmeldung zur Eheschließung (marriage registration), the Standesamt asks for proof that you are free to marry. Depending on your country this may be a civil registry extract, an affidavit or an official certificate. We translate it as a sworn translation (beglaubigte Übersetzung) into German. In German this proof is often called a Ledigkeitsbescheinigung.
- Registry extracts, single status certificates, affidavits and notarised self-declarations from every country
- Turkish, Arabic, Dari, Pashto, Ukrainian, Russian, Hindi and regional-language documents translated directly into German
- Stamp paper details, notary seals, apostilles and attestation stamps included
- PDF in 3 working days, signed original posted to your German address (usually 1–3 working days)

Ledigkeitsbescheinigung or Ehefähigkeitszeugnis: what is the difference?
A Ledigkeitsbescheinigung proves that you are single. An Ehefähigkeitszeugnis (certificate of no impediment to marriage) is issued by your home country and confirms that you may marry. Some countries issue such a certificate, others do not. If your country does not, you need an exemption (Befreiung) from the President of the Higher Regional Court (Oberlandesgericht, OLG).
You file the exemption application at your Standesamt, which sends it to the OLG President. Proof of single status from your home country is part of the file, and it must be in German. The full process is on our page about marrying at a German Standesamt.
Proof of single status: documents by country
Which proof the Standesamt accepts depends on your country and on the court. These are the documents we translate most often:
| Country | Typical document (local name) | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Turkey | Nüfus Kayıt Örneği (civil registry extract showing marital status) | Needs an apostille and a sworn translation. |
| Ukraine | Витяг з Державного реєстру актів цивільного стану (extract from the civil register) | Apostille issued by the Ukrainian justice authorities. |
| Russia | Documents from the ZAGS (civil registry) | Apostille from the Russian justice or civil registry authorities. |
| Syria | إخراج قيد (Ikhraj Qaid), بيان عائلي (family statement) | The marital status entry is translated exactly. Legalisation only in some cases. |
| Iraq | Civil status documents, Unified National Card | Legalisation is suspended; the office decides at its discretion. |
| Afghanistan | Tazkira plus an affidavit about your marital status | Legalisation is not possible; the office decides at its discretion. |
| India | SDM or Tehsildar certificate, parents' affidavit, notarised self-declaration | No national register; see the India example below. |
Example India: SDM certificates and affidavits
India does not issue a formal certificate of no impediment from a national register. So the Indian partner needs the OLG exemption, and German offices often ask for affidavits from the family. According to OLG Köln, some Indian states need affidavits from the parents and the Sarpanch or mayor, others only from the parents.
- Unmarried certificate from an SDM, Tehsildar or local body: office name, reference number, seal and signature
- Affidavit by the parents or the Sarpanch on stamp paper: every sworn statement, stamp paper value and notary seal
- Your own notarised self-declaration: notary stamp, registration number, date of attestation
- Attestation stamps (State Home Department, MEA, consulate): each stamp translated or described
The Consulate General of India in Munich says it does not issue single status certificates; they come from authorities in India or from a court. An Indian apostille is not valid in Germany; see our document verification guide.
How we write names in your translation
A translator sworn by a German court must keep every name as it is on your document. We do not add, drop or reorder names. Names in Arabic, Cyrillic, Persian or an Indian script are transliterated (written in Latin letters). If your passport spelling is different, we add it in a translator's note.
| On your document | In your passport | In our translation |
|---|---|---|
| Mehmet Şahin (Turkish registry extract) | MEHMET SAHIN | Mehmet Şahin (translator's note: passport spelling MEHMET SAHIN) |
| Сергій Мельник (Ukrainian extract) | SERHII MELNYK | Serhij Mel'nyk (translator's note: passport spelling SERHII MELNYK) |
| Harpreet Kour (Indian SDM certificate) | HARPREET KAUR | Harpreet Kour (translator's note: passport spelling HARPREET KAUR) |
If your names differ a lot between papers, a name change document can help. The office decides which proof it needs.
How old can my proof of single status be?
Often not older than six months. According to OLG Köln, proof of single status should not be older than six months. Other courts and your Standesamt may set their own limit. Check your letter. Order your translation soon after you get the document, so it stays within the limit.

Common problems with single status documents, and how we handle them
- 1The document becomes too old. Six months pass quickly. We deliver the PDF fast, so you can submit on time.
- 2The original language matters. Some courts, for example OLG Köln, want a direct translation from the original language. We translate Turkish, Arabic, Dari, Ukrainian, Russian or Hindi directly into German.
- 3Apostille or attestation stamps on the back. They are part of the document. We translate every one.
- 4You were married before. Single status proof is then not enough. You also need proof that the marriage ended, for example a divorce decree translation.
When do you need your single status certificate in German?
- For your marriage registration and the exemption, see marrying at a German Standesamt
- Together with your birth certificate, which the Standesamt also asks for
- Sometimes later, for a spouse's family reunion visa, if the office asks
What language is your single status document in?
Registry extracts are in the official language of your country: Turkish, Arabic, Ukrainian or Russian. Afghan affidavits are often in Dari or Pashto, Iraqi documents in Arabic or Kurdish, Indian affidavits in Hindi, a regional language or English. We translate directly into German, without an English step.

Frequently asked questions about single status certificate translation
Who can translate my proof of single status for the Standesamt?
A translator sworn or authorised by a German court. Our partner translators are sworn by German courts. You can check them at justiz-dolmetscher.de.
What is the difference between a Ledigkeitsbescheinigung and an Ehefähigkeitszeugnis?
A Ledigkeitsbescheinigung proves that you are single. An Ehefähigkeitszeugnis is a certificate of no impediment from your home country. If your country does not issue one, you need an exemption from the OLG President.
Can a Turkish Nüfus Kayıt Örneği show that I am single?
It shows your marital status as recorded in the Turkish civil registry. It needs an apostille and a sworn translation. The Standesamt decides whether it is enough as proof.
I am from Afghanistan. What proof of single status can I use?
Many people use their Tazkira together with an affidavit. We translate both from Dari or Pashto. The office decides at its discretion whether it accepts them.
Is a parents' affidavit enough as proof of single status from India?
It depends on your state in India and on the German court. According to OLG Köln, some states need affidavits from the parents and the Sarpanch or mayor, others only from the parents. Ask your Standesamt.
Do you translate apostilles and attestation stamps too?
Yes. Every stamp, seal and signature on the document is translated or described.
Can you apply for the exemption for me?
No. We only translate documents. We do not submit applications or give legal advice. We cannot guarantee a decision by the Standesamt or the court.
