Can I Get a Punjabi to German Sworn Translation in Germany?

Yes. German courts authorise translators for Punjabi, so a sworn Punjabi to German translation is possible in Germany. There are fewer Punjabi translators than for English or Hindi. So we check our partner translator's free date first and tell you the delivery date before you pay. A sworn translation is valid throughout Germany. The office makes the final decision.

How Singh, Kaur and Your Family Name Are Translated

Many Sikh men carry Singh and many Sikh women carry Kaur. On some Indian documents, Singh or Kaur is the last name. On others, a family name follows, like Sandhu or Gill. Sometimes the family name is on the passport but not on the birth certificate.

Gurmukhi also has no fixed English spelling. The same name can be Harpreet or Harprit, Manjit or Manjeet. A sworn translator must write each name as it stands on the document. So the translator transliterates the Gurmukhi name (writes it in Latin letters). If your passport spells it differently, or has an extra family name, the passport spelling goes into a translator's note.

On your document In your passport In our translation
ਹਰਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਕੌਰ HARPRIT KAUR Harpreet Kaur (translator's note: passport spelling HARPRIT KAUR)
ਗੁਰਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ (no family name) GURPREET SINGH SANDHU Gurpreet Singh (translator's note: passport spelling GURPREET SINGH SANDHU)
ਮਨਜੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ MANJEET SINGH Manjit Singh (translator's note: passport spelling MANJEET SINGH)

If a family name is missing on your document, the translation cannot add it. Some offices ask for an extra document, such as a name change affidavit. Before the final version, you can check all names in a draft.

Kaur or Singh as a Family Name in Germany

German civil registers need a clear family name (Familienname). When you marry in Germany or register a child, the Standesamt looks at which part of your name is the family name. Kaur or Singh alone can lead to questions here. German naming rules changed in 2025; ask your Standesamt what applies to you.

We only translate. We do not advise on name choices. For the documents involved, see getting married at the Standesamt and registering your baby's birth.

Punjabi Documents from Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Chandigarh

Common sources of Punjabi documents are Punjab and Punjabi families in other parts of India, such as Haryana, Delhi and Chandigarh.

  • Birth certificates. Issued by municipal bodies, gram panchayats or through the Civil Registration System. Some mix Gurmukhi and English. More on your birth certificate from Punjab.
  • Anand Karaj certificates. Gurdwaras issue their own marriage certificates. Since 2012, Sikh marriages can also be registered under the Anand Marriage Act. A religious certificate alone may not be enough for every office; a registrar certificate is often preferred. More on your Anand Karaj or registered marriage certificate.
  • School documents. Punjab School Education Board certificates and mark sheets, plus university degrees. More on PSEB and university certificates.
  • Affidavits. For example, when Singh or Kaur was added later or a family name differs.

Most Punjab driving licences are in English. If you need yours for converting your driving licence, we translate every entry, including any Gurmukhi stamps.

Many documents mix Gurmukhi and English on one page. The sworn translation covers every part, so you need only one translator.

Frequently Asked Questions About Punjabi to German Translation

Is there a sworn Punjabi translator in Germany?

Yes. German courts authorise translators for Punjabi. There are fewer than for English, so we confirm the delivery date before you pay.

How do you write Singh and Kaur in the translation?

Exactly as on your document. We do not add or remove Singh, Kaur or a family name. If your passport is different, we add a translator's note with the passport spelling.

My birth certificate has no surname, but my passport does. What happens?

The translation shows only what the document shows. The passport name goes into a translator's note. Your office may ask for an extra document, such as a name change affidavit.

Can you translate an Anand Karaj certificate?

Yes. We translate gurdwara certificates and registered marriage certificates into German, with all stamps and signatures. The office decides which certificate it needs.

Where can I find an "Übersetzer Punjabi Deutsch beglaubigt"?

That is the German search term for a sworn Punjabi to German translator. Our partner translators are sworn by German courts for Punjabi. You order online from anywhere in Germany.

Can I use a translation made in India?

Usually not. Only a translator sworn by a German court can certify a translation for German authorities.

How long does a Punjabi to German sworn translation take?

Usually 3 working days for the PDF. The signed original then comes by post in 1–3 working days. We confirm your exact date before you pay.
