First check: does your certificate need a translation at all?

Not always. The City of Munich says foreign certificates must either be in an international format or come with a translation by a translator sworn in Germany. So if you already hold an international multilingual certificate, ask the Standesamt before you pay for a translation.

The clearest example is Turkey. According to the German Embassy in Turkey, the multilingual extracts Formül A (birth), Formül B (marriage) and Formül C (death) need neither a translation nor an apostille in Germany. A Turkish Nüfus Kayıt Örneği is different: it needs an apostille and a sworn translation. For Ukrainian, Syrian, Afghan, Iraqi, Russian or Indian certificates, plan for a translation unless the Standesamt tells you otherwise.

  4. 4Get the signed paper original by post at home.

Munich offices and the translations they may ask for

In Munich, many services sit under one big city department, the KVR. Each office decides its own document list, so always check its website before you order. This table shows who may ask for what.

Office (German name) What it may ask for in German Our page
Kreisverwaltungsreferat – Servicestelle für Zuwanderung und Einbürgerung (immigration) Birth and marriage certificates for your permit or your family settlement permit · bringing your family
KVR – Einbürgerungsbehörde (citizenship) Birth, marriage and divorce documents citizenship (Einbürgerung)
Standesamt München or Standesamt München-Pasing Birth certificates, proof of single status, marriage certificate marriage at the Standesamt · registering your baby's birth
KVR – Führerscheinstelle Your foreign driving licence Führerschein conversion
Familienkasse Bayern Süd Foreign civil status documents for Kindergeld Kindergeld and Elterngeld
Bayerisches Landesamt für Pflege / Regierung von Oberbayern Diplomas, transcripts and registration papers for health professions professional recognition (Anerkennung)

KVR: immigration and citizenship under one roof

At the KVR, one main department handles both residence and citizenship: the Servicestelle für Zuwanderung und Einbürgerung. The city's citizenship page says it checks submitted documents for authenticity (stadt.muenchen.de). So send clear, complete copies, and have every stamp and the back side translated too.

Do you live outside the city? Places like Garching or Unterföhring belong to the Landkreis München. There, the Landratsamt München handles citizenship, not the KVR (landkreis-muenchen.de). Our translation is the same for both offices.

Two Standesämter in Munich

Munich has two registry offices: Standesamt München and Standesamt München-Pasing. For a birth, the hospital decides. Births at the Helios-Klinikum München-West or the Frauenklinik München-West (Krüsmannklinik), and home births in the western districts, go to Pasing. All others go to Standesamt München (stadt.muenchen.de).

Getting married? If one of you is not German, the Standesamt first gives you a personal first check (Erstauskunft). After it, you know your exact list. Only then order your translations, for example a single status certificate or a birth certificate.

Documents by country for the Munich Standesamt

For a birth registration or a wedding, the Standesamt mostly wants civil status documents: birth, marriage and sometimes divorce papers of the parents or the couple. Here is what people from seven common countries of origin usually bring.

Country Typical document (local name) What to know
Turkey Formül A / Formül B, or Nüfus Kayıt Örneği Formül A and B: no translation or apostille needed. Nüfus Kayıt Örneği: apostille and translation.
Ukraine Свідоцтво про шлюб (marriage certificate) Apostille from the Ukrainian ministries. Older Soviet-era certificates are often in Russian.
Russia Свидетельство о рождении (birth certificate) Issued by the ZAGS. Apostille from Russian justice or civil registry authorities.
Syria عقد زواج (marriage contract) from a Sharia court Legalisation only for certain database extracts, via the German Embassy in Beirut.
Iraq عقد زواج from the personal status court Legalisation is suspended. The Standesamt decides at its discretion.
Afghanistan Nikah-Khat; Tazkira when there is no birth certificate Dari or Pashto. The Standesamt decides whether it accepts the document.
India Birth certificate (often English + Hindi or a regional language) No valid apostille for Germany; the office may request a verification.

Führerscheinstelle at the KVR

The city's page on converting a foreign licence says translations are offered, for example, by automobile clubs or by sworn translators (stadt.muenchen.de). Many Führerscheinstellen accept both, so check first. Licences from Turkey, Russia, Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and India need a theory and practical test to convert; Ukrainian licences follow special rules. See our driving licence translation page.

Nurses and health workers in Bavaria

Bavaria moved recognition for health professions to the Bayerisches Landesamt für Pflege. It handles nursing since 1 July 2023 and other health professions, such as physiotherapy, since 1 July 2025. Its FAQ says translators must be sworn in Germany, the EU, the EEA or Switzerland (lfp.bayern.de). Doctors trained outside the EU apply for their licence to practise (Approbation) at the Regierung von Oberbayern. We translate your degree and transcripts as one consistent set.

Frequently asked questions about sworn translation in Munich

Do I need a translator sworn in Bavaria?

No. A translator sworn by any German court can translate for Munich offices. A sworn translation is valid throughout Germany. The office makes the final decision.

Does the Standesamt München need a translation of my Turkish Formül A?

Usually not. According to the German Embassy in Turkey, Formül A, B and C need neither a translation nor an apostille in Germany. Confirm it with the Standesamt before your appointment.

Can you translate a Syrian marriage contract for the Standesamt?

Yes. We translate Arabic marriage contracts from Sharia courts, including stamps and handwritten notes. The Standesamt decides whether it also needs a legalisation or further proof.

I live in Garching, outside the city. Does that change anything?

Not for the translation. Your office may be different, for example the Landratsamt München instead of the KVR. Price and delivery stay the same.

My baby was born at the Helios-Klinikum München-West. Which Standesamt is it?

Standesamt München-Pasing, according to the city. Births at most other hospitals go to Standesamt München. Our translation of your own certificates is the same for both.

Does the KVR Führerscheinstelle take an ADAC translation?

The city's page names automobile clubs and sworn translators as examples. Many Führerscheinstellen accept both an ADAC translation and a sworn translation. Check your office.

Where do nurses from Ukraine or India apply for recognition in Bavaria?

At the Bayerisches Landesamt für Pflege, which handles nursing recognition since 1 July 2023. It accepts translators sworn in Germany, the EU, the EEA or Switzerland, according to its FAQ.
