Kindergeld Documents Translation for Families in Germany
Last updated: 2 October 2026
You applied for Kindergeld (child benefit). Then a letter from the Familienkasse asks for more documents. Does your child's birth certificate from Turkey, Ukraine, Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Russia or India need a German translation? We make a sworn translation (beglaubigte Übersetzung) of exactly the documents the office asks for, such as the Geburtsurkunde (birth certificate) for the Kindergeld-Antrag (application). Our partner translators sworn by German courts do the work.
- Your child's foreign birth certificate translated with every stamp and entry
- Send a copy to the Familienkasse, keep the signed original for other offices
- Turkish, Arabic, Kurdish, Dari, Pashto, Ukrainian, Russian, English, Hindi and other Indian languages
- Names kept exactly as written, with your passport spelling in a translator's note
- PDF in 3 working days, signed original posted to your German address (usually 1–3 working days)

What documents does the Familienkasse need for a child born abroad?
For a child born abroad, the Familienkasse asks for a copy of the foreign birth certificate, and it can ask for a translation. You send it with the application (KG1) and the Anlage Kind (child supplement), and you give your tax ID (Steuer-ID). For a child born in Germany, the Familienkasse usually works with the tax IDs, so no foreign document is needed for the child.

Kindergeld Unterlagen Übersetzung: which documents need a translation?
Only the foreign documents the office names in its letter. In most families that is the child's birth certificate, sometimes the parents' marriage certificate. Documents issued in Germany never need a translation.
| Document | When you need it | Translation needed? |
|---|---|---|
| Child's foreign birth certificate | Kindergeld for a child born outside Germany | If the Familienkasse asks. See birth certificate translation. |
| Marriage certificate | Updating your marital status after a marriage abroad | Possible. See marriage certificate translation. |
| Marriage and birth certificates | Krankenkasse family insurance, if it asks for proof | Likely, if not in German |
| Name change proof | If names differ between documents | If the office asks. See name change affidavit. |
| Tax IDs, German birth certificate | Child born in Germany | No, already German |
Documents you do not need to translate: German birth certificates, German payslips, your German residence permit, your tax ID letter and the application forms.
Your child's birth document by country
Birth documents differ from country to country. The Familienkasse decides which documents and what proof it needs.
| Country | Typical document (local name) | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Turkey | Formül A (international birth extract), Doğum Belgesi, Nüfus Kayıt Örneği | Formül A needs no translation and no apostille. Other Turkish documents need a sworn translation. |
| Ukraine | Свідоцтво про народження (birth certificate) | Older family records may be Soviet-era and in Russian. We translate both. |
| Russia | Свидетельство о рождении (birth certificate from the ZAGS) | Cyrillic names are transliterated, passport spelling in a note. |
| Syria | شهادة ميلاد (birth certificate), إخراج قيد (Ikhraj Qaid), بيان عائلي (family statement) | The German Embassy in Beirut legalises extracts from the electronic database. Otherwise the office decides case by case. |
| Iraq | شهادة ميلاد (birth certificate), Unified National Card | Legalisation is suspended. The office decides at its discretion. |
| Afghanistan | Tazkira; birth certificate often missing | No verification possible. The office decides what it accepts. |
| India | Birth certificate from the registrar (often CRS digital, English plus Hindi or a regional language) | No apostille; offices can ask the German mission for a verification. |
Does the Familienkasse need a translation at all?
Kindergeld is part of German tax law, so the tax procedure rules apply (§ 87 AO). The official language is German. The office can ask for a translation of a foreign document and, in justified cases, for a translation by a sworn translator. Your letter tells you what is needed. We translate only that.
Send copies, not originals
The Familienkasse clearly says: send only copies, never originals. So you send a copy of the translation and keep the signed original safe. Other offices, such as the Standesamt or the Ausländerbehörde, may ask for it later.
A child who still lives abroad
Kindergeld for a child who lives outside Germany, the EU and the EEA is only possible in special cases. Germany has agreements with some countries, and the conditions vary with your situation. Please check with the Familienkasse before you order translations. We do not advise on eligibility.
After marriage: tax class and health insurance
When you marry, your marital status (Familienstand) changes in the registration data. This update usually triggers the new tax class at the Finanzamt. If you married abroad, the Bürgeramt may ask for your marriage certificate with a translation. A Turkish Formül B needs no translation. Some Finanzämter say you need no document once your marriage is in the registration data.
To add your spouse or children to your Krankenkasse family insurance, ask for its form. If it asks for a foreign certificate, it can also ask for a German translation.
What about Elterngeld?
For Elterngeld you get a birth certificate for Elterngeld (Geburtsbescheinigung) from the Standesamt. That is already in German. If the Elterngeldstelle asks for another foreign document, we translate it. You may need our help earlier, when registering your baby's birth.
Why family benefit files get delayed, and how we help
- 1The letter asks for "proof", but not which kind. Send us a photo of the letter. We translate only what is needed.
- 2Names look different. An Arabic, Dari or Cyrillic name may be spelt another way in your passport. We keep the name as written and add a translator's note.
- 3Missing stamps or back sides. Unclear seals cause questions. We translate every stamp and note.
- 4Deadlines in the letter. Familienkasse letters often give a deadline. We send the PDF in 3 working days.

Frequently asked questions about Kindergeld documents translation
Do I need to translate my child's foreign birth certificate for Kindergeld?
Often yes, if the Familienkasse asks for it. For a child born abroad, it asks for a copy of the foreign birth certificate. German is the official language, so it can ask for a translation.
Does the Familienkasse need a sworn translation?
The tax rules (§ 87 AO) let the office ask for a translation by a sworn translator in justified cases. Your letter says what is needed.
Should I send the original translation to the Familienkasse?
No. The Familienkasse asks for copies only. Keep the signed original for other offices.
Can I get Kindergeld for a child who lives outside the EU?
Only in special cases. Whether an agreement between Germany and your child's country helps you depends on your situation. Please check with the Familienkasse before you order translations.
My child has a Turkish Formül A. Does it need a translation?
According to the German Embassy in Turkey, the international birth extract Formül A needs neither a translation nor an apostille in Germany. Other Turkish documents, such as the Nüfus Kayıt Örneği, do need a translation.
My baby was born in Germany. Do I need any translation for Kindergeld or Elterngeld?
Usually not for the child. The Familienkasse usually works with the tax IDs. For Elterngeld you get a birth certificate for Elterngeld from the Standesamt, which is already in German.
Do I need my marriage certificate to change my tax class?
Sometimes. The tax class usually changes when your marital status is updated in the registration data. If you married abroad, the office may ask for the certificate and a translation.
My child's only document is an Afghan Tazkira or a Syrian Ikhraj Qaid. Is that enough?
The Familienkasse decides what proof it accepts. Afghan documents cannot currently be verified, and Iraqi legalisation is suspended. For Syrian extracts from the electronic database, the German Embassy in Beirut offers legalisation. We translate whatever the office asks for.
