Initials, Titles and Single Names: How Your Tamil Name Is Translated
Many Tamil families do not use a hereditary surname. Instead, a person writes an initial before the name, usually from the father's name. In Tamil script the initial is a syllable. So a man named Karthik, whose father is Ramasamy, is ரா. கார்த்திக் (Ra. Karthik) in Tamil. In English documents he is "R. Karthik".
Passports work differently. Some passports turn the father's name into the surname: KARTHIK RAMASAMY. Some have a given name only and no surname. A sworn translator must follow the document. So the translator keeps the initial as an initial and never expands it. If your passport differs, the passport spelling goes into a translator's note.
| On your document | In your passport | In our translation |
|---|---|---|
| ரா. கார்த்திக் (Tamil birth certificate) | Given name KARTHIK, surname RAMASAMY | Ra. Karthik (translator's note: passport spelling KARTHIK RAMASAMY) |
| R. Karthick (English school certificate) | Given name KARTHIK, surname RAMASAMY | R. Karthick (translator's note: passport spelling KARTHIK RAMASAMY) |
| கார்த்திக் (no initial) | Given name KARTHIK RAMASAMY, no surname | Karthik (translator's note: passport spelling KARTHIK RAMASAMY, given name only) |
Titles are titles. On Tamil documents, திரு means "Mr", திருமதி means "Mrs" and செல்வி often means "Miss". The translator renders these as titles, not as part of your name. Selvi can also be a given name, so the translator checks the context.
If the office asks why your names look different, you may need a "one and the same person" affidavit. We can translate that too.
Tamil Documents from Tamil Nadu and Puducherry
Common sources of Tamil documents are Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, and Tamil families in other Indian cities.
- Birth certificates. Issued by municipalities, town panchayats or through the Civil Registration System. Some print Tamil and English side by side, and stamps are often only in Tamil. More on your Tamil Nadu birth certificate.
- Marriage certificates. Registered with the Registrar of Marriages, or temple marriage records. A temple record alone may not be enough for every office; a registered certificate is often preferred. More on your marriage certificate from Tamil Nadu.
- School and university documents. SSLC (Class 10) and HSC (Class 12) certificates and mark sheets, plus degrees. More on SSLC, HSC and degree certificates.
- Affidavits. Often used to explain initials and different name forms.
A sworn translation covers every part of the page, Tamil and English, in one translation.

Frequently Asked Questions About Tamil to German Translation
Is there a sworn Tamil translator in Germany?
Yes. German courts have sworn translators for Tamil, but not many. We confirm the delivery date before you pay.
My passport has no surname. Will the translation match?
The translation follows your document. We do not add a surname that is not there. If your passport shows your name differently, we add a translator's note with the passport spelling.
Will you write my initial as a full name?
No. A sworn translation must follow the document, so an initial stays an initial. If your passport shows the full name, it goes into a translator's note.
Is "Selvi" on my certificate a name or a title?
Often it is the title "Miss", like திரு for "Mr" and திருமதி for "Mrs". Selvi can also be a given name. The translator checks the context and translates it correctly.
Where can I find an "Übersetzer Tamil Deutsch beglaubigt"?
That is the German search term for a sworn Tamil to German translator. Our partner translators are sworn by German courts for Tamil. You order online from anywhere in Germany.
Can I use a translation made in India?
Usually not. Only a translator sworn by a German court can certify a translation for German authorities.
How long does a Tamil to German sworn translation take?
Usually 3 working days for the PDF. The signed original then comes by post in 1–3 working days. We confirm your exact date before you pay.
