Do I need a translator sworn at a court in Hesse?
No. A translator sworn by any German court can translate for Frankfurt offices, and the translation is valid throughout Germany. It does not matter if the translator took the oath in Frankfurt, Berlin or Bavaria. What counts is the German oath, the signature and the stamp. The office makes the final decision.

Einbürgerung in Frankfurt happens at the Standesamt
This surprises many people. In Frankfurt, citizenship is not handled by the Immigration Office. It is a department of the Standesamt (registry office): Staatsangehörigkeit, Einbürgerungen, Namensänderungen. It works centrally for all Frankfurt residents (frankfurt.de).
Its information sheet is clear: for every foreign document, you hand in the original and a German translation by a translator authorised in Germany for courts and notaries. This includes documents in English (frankfurt.de, PDF). So an Indian degree in English or a Ukrainian diploma supplement printed in English still needs a German translation for this office.
You are not alone with this file. According to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), Germany recorded 332,500 naturalisations in 2025, a record. Since 27 June 2024, dual citizenship is allowed, so you may be able to keep your current passport if your home country permits it.
Your Einbürgerung file: documents by country
Most citizenship files need proof of identity, birth, marriage and, if relevant, divorce or name changes. The exact list comes from the Standesamt. This table shows what people from each country typically translate, and which extra check may apply to the original.
| Country | Typical document (local name) | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Turkey | Nüfus Kayıt Örneği, Boşanma Kararı with Kesinleşme Şerhi (divorce judgment with finality note) | Apostille needed. Many offices want the apostille translated too. |
| Ukraine | Витяг з Державного реєстру актів цивільного стану (civil register extract), divorce court decision | Apostille from the Ukrainian Ministry of Justice for civil status and court documents. |
| Russia | Свидетельство о расторжении брака (divorce certificate), birth certificate | Apostille from Russian justice or civil registry authorities. |
| Syria | إخراج قيد (Ikhraj Qaid), بيان عائلي (family statement) | The German Embassy in Beirut legalises certain database extracts certified by the Syrian Foreign Ministry. |
| Iraq | شهادة الجنسية (nationality certificate), Unified National Card | Legalisation is suspended. The office decides at its discretion. |
| Afghanistan | Tazkira, Nikah-Khat, school certificates | No legalisation possible. Often a Tazkira plus an affidavit replaces a missing birth certificate. |
| India | Birth certificate, divorce decree, name change affidavit | No valid apostille for Germany. The office may ask for a verification via the German mission in India. |
Order the whole set at once. The translator then writes every name the same way across all documents, which makes the check easier for the Standesamt. More on this: citizenship translation.
Frankfurt offices that may ask for a sworn translation
Besides the Standesamt, Frankfurt residents usually deal with the Immigration Office, the Führerscheinstelle and, for Kindergeld, the Familienkasse. Each office decides its own list. Check the office's own website for its current document list.
| Office (German name) | What it may ask for in German | Our page |
|---|---|---|
| Frankfurt Immigration Office – Ausländerbehörde | Birth and marriage certificates for a settlement permit or your family's residence | permanent residence · family reunion |
| Standesamt – Staatsangehörigkeit, Einbürgerungen, Namensänderungen | Birth, marriage and divorce documents, name change papers | naturalisation file |
| Standesamt (districts Mitte and Höchst) | Birth certificates, proof of single status, marriage certificate | marriage registration · birth registration for your baby |
| Ordnungsamt – Führerscheinstelle | Your foreign driving licence | licence conversion |
| Familienkasse Hessen | Foreign civil status documents for Kindergeld | child benefit (Kindergeld) |
| Hessisches Landesamt für Gesundheit und Pflege (HLfGP) | Degree, transcripts and registration papers for doctors and nurses | recognition of your qualification |
The Frankfurt Immigration Office
The Ausländerbehörde is its own city office and calls itself the Frankfurt Immigration Office. You need an appointment to visit. For a settlement permit, or when your spouse and children join you, it may ask for German translations of your civil status documents. Wait for its letter, then order everything in one go.
Standesamt Mitte or Höchst?
Frankfurt's registry office has two districts. Standesamtsbezirk Höchst covers the western districts, such as Griesheim, Höchst, Nied and Sossenheim, and births at the Klinikum Frankfurt Höchst. Standesamtsbezirk Mitte covers the rest of the city (frankfurt.de). The official language at both is German, so foreign certificates normally need a translation.
Your foreign licence and the Führerscheinstelle
In Frankfurt, the Führerscheinstelle is part of the Ordnungsamt (public order office). A non-EU licence is usually valid for six months after you take up residence in Germany (normally your Anmeldung), and the city asks you to apply in person. Turkish, Russian, Syrian, Iraqi, Afghan and Indian licences need a theory and a practical test to convert; Ukrainian licences have special rules. Many offices accept an ADAC translation as well as a sworn one, so ask first. See our driving licence translation page.
Doctors and nurses in Hesse
In Hesse, the HLfGP issues the licence to practise medicine (Approbation) for doctors with degrees from outside the EU. It also handles recognition for nurses. Check the HLfGP's own document list for its translation rules. We translate your degree and transcripts as one consistent set.

Frequently asked questions about sworn translation in Frankfurt
Does my translator have to be sworn in Hesse?
No. A translator sworn by any German court can translate for Frankfurt offices. A sworn translation is valid throughout Germany. The office makes the final decision.
Do my English documents need a translation for Einbürgerung in Frankfurt?
Yes, according to Frankfurt's information sheet on naturalisation. It asks for a German translation of every foreign document, including English ones. Check the list you received.
Does the apostille on my Turkish or Russian document need translating too?
Often yes. Many offices want the apostille translated together with the document. Upload both pages, and we translate them as one document.
My Syrian Ikhraj Qaid comes from the electronic database. Is that enough?
The German Embassy in Beirut can legalise such extracts if the Syrian Foreign Ministry certified them after 1 January 2012. Appointments go through VFS Global in Beirut. Otherwise the Frankfurt office decides case by case.
My Indian certificate has an apostille. Is that accepted?
No. Germany does not accept Indian apostilles. If the office wants to check the document, it asks the German mission in India for a verification, which you cannot start yourself.
I live in Offenbach or Eschborn. Can I still order?
Yes. We post to any address in Germany. Your office may be a different one, so check your own town's website for its document list.
Will the Frankfurt Immigration Office ask for the original?
Some offices want to see your original documents together with the translation. Follow the letter from the Immigration Office. Usually a clear scan or photo is enough for us to translate.
