Malayalam to German Sworn Translation in Germany

Last updated: 2 October 2026

People from Kerala live in Germany as engineers, students, nurses, doctors and families. Sooner or later a German office asks for a Malayalam document in German. You then need a Malayalam to German sworn translation (beglaubigte Übersetzung), made by a translator sworn by a German court. We arrange it with our partner translators sworn by German courts. Typical documents are a birth certificate (Geburtsurkunde) and a marriage certificate (Heiratsurkunde).

  • Malayalam documents from Kerala, Lakshadweep and Mahé, including Malayalam–English forms
  • Names kept exactly as on your document, with your passport spelling in a translator's note
  • House names, initials and single names kept as written, never expanded or reordered
  • PDF in 3 working days, signed original posted to your German address (usually 1–3 working days)

Your Malayalam translator

Your translation is made by a translator sworn by a German court, usually a Landgericht (regional court) or Oberlandesgericht (higher regional court). The translator reads Malayalam script, transliterates every name into Latin letters and confirms with stamp and signature that the German text is complete and correct. A translator in India cannot certify a translation for German authorities.

Malayali names: house names, initials and single names

Malayali names do not follow one rule. Some people write a house name (the family home's name) before their own name, like പുത്തൻവീട്ടിൽ അനിത (Puthanveettil Anitha). Others use one name plus an initial, like "Muhammed Shafi P.", where the initial often stands for the house name. In many Christian families, the father's name works as the surname. In some Hindu families, a community name like Nair or Menon is used as the surname, but it may not be on every document.

German forms need a "Vorname" (first name) and a "Familienname" (family name). Your passport may show the house name as surname, or the surname field may be empty. Your birth certificate may show only one name. Transliteration adds another difference: പുത്തൻ can be written "Puthan" or "Puthen".

How a sworn translation handles this:

  1. 1The translator keeps the order of your document. A house name that comes first stays first.
  2. 2An initial stays an initial. The translator never expands it on their own.
  3. 3No name is added. If "Nair" is not on your birth certificate, it is not in the translation.
  4. 4Your passport spelling goes into a translator's note, so the office can match both forms.
On your document In your passport In our translation
പുത്തൻവീട്ടിൽ അനിത Given name: ANITHA · Surname: PUTHENVEETTIL Puthanveettil Anitha (translator's note: passport spelling ANITHA PUTHENVEETTIL)
Muhammed Shafi P. (in Malayalam script) Given name: MOHAMMED SHAFI Muhammed Shafi P. (translator's note: passport spelling MOHAMMED SHAFI; the initial "P." is not expanded)
Anitha only (birth certificate, in Malayalam script) Given name: ANITHA · Surname: NAIR Anitha (translator's note: passport name ANITHA NAIR)

Your Indian passport lists your father's, mother's and spouse's names on the last page. Please upload that page too. If you have a one-and-the-same-person or name affidavit, we can translate it with your certificate. Whether the office needs one is the office's decision.

Malayalam documents from Kerala

Malayalam is used in Kerala, Lakshadweep and Mahé. Common documents and their layouts:

  • Birth certificates from grama panchayats, municipalities and corporations. Many have Malayalam and English on the same page. See Kerala birth certificate.
  • Marriage certificates from a church (parish) or from the local marriage registrar. A church certificate may be in Malayalam only, or in English with a Malayalam seal. See church or registered marriage certificate.
  • School papers such as the SSLC certificate, which may have Malayalam parts, and school leaving certificates.

We translate all text on the page into German, in both languages, including seals, stamps and handwritten notes.

For nurses and other health workers: your nursing diploma, transcripts and council registration are usually in English. For those, you need an English to German sworn translation, not Malayalam. See also nursing diploma and transcripts. Send us all your papers and we tell you which is which. For papers from Tamil Nadu, see Tamil to German translation.

Why do people in Germany need a Malayalam translation?

Many nurses from Kerala come to Germany through the Triple Win programme. The German Federal Employment Agency runs it with GIZ, and Norka Roots handles recruitment in Kerala (source). Engineers, students and their families need translations too. Each process has its own page:

An Indian apostille is not valid in Germany. If your office needs to check an Indian document, it asks the German Embassy in India for a verification. You cannot start this yourself. Read our document verification guide.

Frequently asked questions about Malayalam to German translation

Is there a sworn Malayalam translator in Germany?

Yes. Malayalam is a smaller language in Germany, but we work with a partner translator sworn by a German court for Malayalam. We confirm the delivery date before you pay.

I searched for "Übersetzer Malayalam Deutsch beglaubigt". Is that the same service?

Yes. The phrase means a sworn translation (beglaubigte Übersetzung) from Malayalam into German, made by a translator sworn by a German court. That is the service on this page.

Can my Kerala birth certificate be translated to German?

Yes. We translate the whole certificate, both the Malayalam and the English parts, including seals and stamps. Names stay as written, with your passport spelling in a translator's note.

My name has only an initial. Will you write the full name?

No. A sworn translation keeps the initial as written. The translator can add your passport spelling in a translator's note.

My passport has no surname. Is that a problem?

The translation follows your document and notes your passport spelling. How your name is recorded in Germany is decided by the German office. Ask your office if you are unsure.

I am a nurse from Kerala. Do I need a Malayalam or an English translation?

Nursing diplomas and registrations are usually in English, so they need an English to German sworn translation. Birth or marriage papers in Malayalam need a Malayalam to German sworn translation. We check your papers for you.

Will the German office accept my translation?

A sworn translation is valid throughout Germany. The office makes the final decision, so we cannot guarantee a decision.
