Can any sworn translator in Germany translate for Stuttgart offices?
Yes. A translator sworn by any German court can translate for offices in Stuttgart. Stuttgart's offices ask for a translator sworn or admitted in Germany, not a translator from Stuttgart itself. A sworn translation is valid throughout Germany. The office makes the final decision.

What Stuttgart offices say about translators
Stuttgart offices use slightly different German words, but they all mean the same: the translator must be sworn or admitted in Germany. Here is what official Stuttgart pages say about foreign documents, quoted in German and explained in English.
| Office | What the official page says | In plain words |
|---|---|---|
| Einbürgerung (Staatsangehörigkeit, Einbürgerung, Namensrecht) | "Übersetzung durch einen in Deutschland zugelassenen Urkundenübersetzer" | A document translator admitted in Germany |
| Standesamt Stuttgart | "von einem im Inland vereidigten Urkundenübersetzer" | A document translator sworn in Germany |
| Oberlandesgericht Stuttgart (Higher Regional Court) | Translator "öffentlich bestellt und allgemein vereidigt" in Germany, or admitted in an EU country | A sworn translator, for example for the exemption from the Ehefähigkeitszeugnis |
| Führerscheinstelle | "Ausländischer Führerschein mit Übersetzung" | Your licence with a translation |
Rules can change. Check the office's own website for its current document list.
Why a translation from your home country is usually not enough
German offices usually do not accept translations made abroad, even when a notary in Istanbul, Kyiv, Moscow or Delhi has stamped them. They want a translator sworn by a German court, because a German court has sworn in that translator. You can check any translator in the official register at justiz-dolmetscher.de.
The apostille or legalisation of your original is a separate matter. It confirms the document, not the translation. For example, a Turkish Nüfus Kayıt Örneği or a Russian ZAGS certificate usually needs an apostille, while Iraqi and Afghan documents cannot be legalised and the office decides. Indian documents may need a verification instead.
Beglaubigte Übersetzung Stuttgart: your offices and our pages
In Stuttgart, residence and citizenship both sit in the Amt für öffentliche Ordnung (public order office), the Standesamt handles weddings and births, and the Regierungspräsidium handles health recognition. Use this table to find the right page for your case.
| Office (German name) | What it may ask for in German | Our matching page |
|---|---|---|
| Ausländerbehörde (Amt für öffentliche Ordnung) | Marriage certificate, children's birth certificates | Settlement permit translation · family reunion documents |
| Einbürgerung office (Amt für öffentliche Ordnung) | Birth, marriage and divorce documents | Citizenship translation |
| Standesamt Stuttgart | Birth certificate, proof of single status, parents' documents after a birth | Marriage at the Standesamt · birth registration translation |
| Führerscheinstelle | Your foreign driving licence | Licence conversion translation |
| Familienkasse (Bundesagentur für Arbeit) | Sometimes a child's foreign birth certificate | Kindergeld and Elterngeld translation |
| Regierungspräsidium Stuttgart | Degree, transcripts, training certificates for health jobs | Anerkennung translation |
New in 2026: since May 2026, Stuttgart's Einbürgerung team works as its own unit, separate from the Ausländerbehörde. Both units sit in the Amt für öffentliche Ordnung. If you wrote to the Ausländerbehörde about citizenship before, check who now handles your file.
Working in health care anywhere in Baden-Württemberg
The Regierungspräsidium Stuttgart handles recognition for the whole state of Baden-Württemberg. This covers the Approbation (licence to practise) for doctors, dentists, pharmacists and psychotherapists, plus nurses and other health jobs (Gesundheitsfachberufe). So even if you live in Karlsruhe or Freiburg, your health file goes to Stuttgart. For other jobs, the portal Anerkennung in Deutschland shows the right office.
Degrees and transcripts by country
| Country | Typical document (local name) | What to know |

| Afghanistan | School and university certificates in Dari or Pashto | No legalisation possible; the office decides. |

Frequently asked questions about sworn translation in Stuttgart
Do I need a sworn translator from Stuttgart or Baden-Württemberg?
No. Stuttgart's offices ask for a translator sworn or admitted in Germany. A translator sworn by a court in another federal state is fine. The office makes the final decision.
What does "Urkundenübersetzer" mean on Stuttgart's pages?
It means a document translator. Stuttgart's Einbürgerung office and Standesamt want one who is admitted or sworn in Germany. Our partner translators are sworn by German courts.
A notary in Kyiv or Istanbul already translated my documents. Will Stuttgart accept that?
Usually not. German offices normally do not accept translations made abroad or by notaries abroad. Plan for a new translation by a translator sworn in Germany.
How can I check that a translator is really sworn?
Search the official register at justiz-dolmetscher.de. It lists translators sworn or authorised by German courts, with their languages.
Who handles Einbürgerung in Stuttgart now?
Since May 2026, a separate unit for citizenship (Staatsangehörigkeit, Einbürgerung, Namensrecht) handles it. It is part of the Amt für öffentliche Ordnung. Check the city website for how to contact it.
I live in Esslingen or Ludwigsburg, not in Stuttgart. Can you help?
Yes. We post to any address in Germany. Your responsible office may be in your own town or district. Follow the document list that this office gives you.
Does the Welcome Center Stuttgart need my translations?
The Welcome Center gives information and advice. It does not decide on your permit. The office that decides tells you which translations it needs.
