Will My Hindi Name Match My Passport?
Not always letter by letter, and that is normal. Devanagari has no single English spelling. The same name can appear in Latin letters in several ways. A sworn translator must write the name as it stands on the document. So the translator transliterates it (writes it in Latin letters) in a consistent way. If your passport spells it differently, the passport spelling goes into a translator's note. The officer then sees the document as it is and how it connects to your passport.
Typical differences between Hindi documents and Indian passports look like this:
| On your document | In your passport | In our translation |
|---|---|---|
| राजेन्द्र कुमार | RAJENDER KUMAR | Rajendra Kumar (translator's note: passport spelling RAJENDER KUMAR) |
| सुरेन्द्र सिंह | SURENDER SINGH | Surendra Singh (translator's note: passport spelling SURENDER SINGH) |
| मोहम्मद आसिफ | MOHAMMED ASIF | Mohammad Asif (translator's note: passport spelling MOHAMMED ASIF) |
We never add a surname that is not on the document, and we never drop one that is. If you have many documents, order them together. Then the same spellings and notes run through the whole set.
Your parents' names. Your passport's last page shows your father's, mother's and spouse's names. Send that page too. The translator can then note those spellings as well.
Hindi Words and Forms on Indian Documents
Hindi certificates use words and forms that a German officer will not know. A good translation handles them clearly:
- श्री and श्रीमती are titles, like "Mr" and "Mrs". They are translated as titles, not as part of the name.
- पुत्र, पुत्री and पत्नी mean "son of", "daughter of" and "wife of". They show family links, like S/O or D/O in English.
- Kumar and Kumari often appear as part of a name on one document and not on another. We keep them where the document has them.
- Devanagari digits such as १५/०८/१९९० are written in Western digits, for example 15.08.1990.
- Stamps and seals from the Nagar Nigam, Tehsil or Gram Panchayat are translated or described, including handwritten notes.
Hindi Documents from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan and Other States
Common sources of Hindi documents are Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. Typical documents are:
- Birth certificates. Old handwritten certificates from gram panchayats and municipal bodies, and newer CRS certificates, often in Hindi and English. Since 1 October 2023, births in India are registered digitally through the CRS. More on Hindi birth certificates.
- Marriage certificates. Registrations under the Hindu Marriage Act or by a state marriage registrar. More on marriage certificates.
- School and university documents. Hindi-medium mark sheets and certificates are often issued by the UP Board (UPMSP), BSEB (Bihar), RBSE (Rajasthan) and MPBSE (Madhya Pradesh). More on mark sheets and degree certificates.
- Affidavits (शपथ पत्र) and gazette notices. Often used to explain different names. More on affidavits and name change documents.
Many of these documents mix Hindi and English on one page. The sworn translation covers every part, so you need only one translation.
