How Your Urdu Name Is Written: محمد, Mohd. and MOHAMMED
Urdu is written from right to left, and many short vowels are not written at all. So one Urdu name can have many Latin spellings. محمد can be Muhammad, Mohammad or Mohammed. سید can be Sayyid, Syed or Sayed.
Your documents may not agree with each other. Your Urdu document writes محمد in full, your school certificate may say "Mohd.", and your passport may say "MOHAMMED". We keep each document's form and note the passport spelling. A sworn translator never expands a short form and never drops a name part, such as Begum or Khatoon.
| On your document | In your passport | In our translation |
|---|---|---|
| محمد عمران (Urdu Nikahnama) | MOHAMMED IMRAN | Muhammad Imran (translator's note: passport spelling MOHAMMED IMRAN) |
| Mohd. Imran (English school certificate) | MOHAMMED IMRAN | Mohd. Imran (translator's note: passport spelling MOHAMMED IMRAN) |
| سید عارف | SYED ARIF | Sayyid Arif (translator's note: passport spelling SYED ARIF) |
| فاطمہ بیگم | FATIMA | Fatima Begum (translator's note: passport spelling FATIMA) |
Your passport's last page lists your father's, mother's and spouse's names. Send it with your order, so those names get a note too.
Nikahnama, Mehr and Hijri Dates: What We Translate
An Urdu Nikahnama holds more than two names. A German Standesamt or Ausländerbehörde needs every entry, so we translate:
- The names of the bride, the groom, the wali or vakil (representative) and the two witnesses
- The Mehr (the amount the groom promises the bride) exactly as written, for example in rupees or in gold
- The Qazi's name, seal and registration number
- Every date as written. Some Nikahnamas give the Islamic (Hijri) date as well; we translate both dates and do not convert them.
More on Nikahnama and marriage certificates.
Talaq documents. We translate divorce papers such as a talaqnama in full. Instant triple talaq is void in India. We translate any document; whether it ended the marriage is decided by the German authority.
Madrasa and school certificates. We translate school and madrasa certificates as issued. Whether an office recognises a certificate is the office's decision, not the translator's.
Urdu Documents from India
Common sources of Urdu documents are Uttar Pradesh, Telangana (especially Hyderabad), Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, and Maharashtra. Many documents mix Urdu with Hindi or English. Stamps can be in a different language from the main text. The sworn translation covers every language on the page. More on your birth certificate in Urdu.

Frequently Asked Questions About Urdu to German Translation
Is there a sworn Urdu translator in Germany?
Yes. German courts authorise translators for Urdu. You can check any sworn translator in the official register at justiz-dolmetscher.de.
How do you write Mohammed or Mohd. in the translation?
As on your document. If the document says Mohd., the translation says Mohd. If your passport says MOHAMMED, we add a translator's note with that spelling.
Can you translate my Nikahnama into German?
Yes. We translate the full Nikahnama, including the witnesses, the Mehr, the Qazi's seal, every date and all signatures.
Do you translate madrasa certificates?
Yes. Whether a German office recognises the certificate is decided by that office, not by the translator.
Where can I find an "Übersetzer Urdu Deutsch beglaubigt"?
That is the German search term for a sworn Urdu to German translator. Our partner translators are sworn by German courts for Urdu. You order online from anywhere in Germany.
Can I use a translation made in India?
Usually not. Only a translator sworn by a German court can certify a translation for German authorities.
How long does an Urdu to German sworn translation take?
Usually 3 working days for the PDF. The signed original then comes by post in 1–3 working days. We confirm your exact date before you pay.
