Which documents need translation for German citizenship?

Usually every civil status document that was not issued in German. This means your birth certificate, your marriage certificate and a divorce judgment if you were married before. If your children apply with you, their birth certificates are needed too. Many offices also want English documents in German. Always check the list your Einbürgerungsbehörde (citizenship office) sent you.

Is this page for you?

  • You have lived in Germany legally for the required years and your Einbürgerungsbehörde has sent you a document list.
  • You passed your B1 German exam and the naturalisation test (Einbürgerungstest), or you have the "Leben in Deutschland" certificate from your integration course.
  • Some of your documents are in Turkish, Arabic, Kurdish, Dari, Pashto, Ukrainian, Russian, English, Hindi or another language.

According to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), Germany naturalised about 332,500 people in 2025, a new record. The largest groups were Syrians (65,600), Turks (34,100) and Russians (19,700). Offices are busy, and a complete file with correct translations helps you avoid a second round of letters.

Dual citizenship: Germany has allowed dual citizenship since 27 June 2024. Whether your home country lets you keep its citizenship is a question for its own law. Ask its embassy or consulate in Germany. We only translate.

Einbürgerung Unterlagen Übersetzung: your checklist

Your Einbürgerungsbehörde decides the final list. Applicants with foreign documents are often asked for:

Document When you need it Translation needed?
Birth certificate translation Always Yes, if not in German; English often too
Marriage certificate or contract If you are married Yes, if not in German
Divorce judgment If you were married before Yes, if not in German
Civil registry extract or family statement If your office asks, for example a Nüfus Kayıt Örneği or a بيان عائلي Yes
Your children's birth certificates If your children apply with you Yes, if not in German
Name change document or affidavit If your name differs between documents Yes, if not in German

Documents you don't need to translate: documents issued in Germany, such as your residence permit, salary slips, pension record, B1 certificate and test certificate.

Documents by country

Citizenship offices see documents from many countries. Each country names its civil status documents differently and has its own rules for confirming them. Here is what to know for the most common countries of origin.

Country Typical document (local name) What to know
Syria إخراج قيد (Ikhraj Qaid), بيان عائلي, عقد زواج from a Sharia court The German Embassy in Beirut legalises certain database extracts. Otherwise your office decides case by case.
Turkey Nüfus Kayıt Örneği, Doğum Belgesi, Evlenme Cüzdanı, Formül A/B Most documents need an apostille. Formül A and B need neither a translation nor an apostille.
Russia Свидетельство о рождении, Свидетельство о браке Apostille from the ZAGS or justice authorities.
Ukraine Свідоцтво про народження, Витяг з Державного реєстру Apostille from the Ukrainian ministries. Soviet-era certificates are often in Russian.
Iraq شهادة الجنسية (nationality certificate), البطاقة الوطنية الموحدة Legalisation is suspended. Your office decides at its discretion.
Afghanistan Tazkira, Nikah-Khat No legalisation possible. Birth certificates are often missing; your office decides what it accepts.
India Birth certificate, marriage certificate An Indian apostille is not valid. Your office may ask the German mission in India for a verification.

Details for each country are in our guide to apostille, legalisation and verification. An apostille, if needed, comes first; we then translate it together with the document.

How names are handled in your translation

A sworn translator copies names exactly as they appear on your document and transliterates Arabic, Cyrillic, Persian and Devanagari script. The translator does not change the order, add a name or drop a part. If your passport spells a name differently, a translator's note shows the passport spelling, so the office can match your documents.

On your document In your passport In our translation
محمد الأحمد (Syrian civil registry extract) MOHAMAD ALAHMAD Muhammad al-Ahmad (translator's note: passport spelling MOHAMAD ALAHMAD)
Сергей Иванов (Russian birth certificate) SERGEY IVANOV Sergej Ivanov (translator's note: passport spelling SERGEY IVANOV)
राजेन्द्र कुमार (Hindi birth certificate) RAJENDER KUMAR Rajendra Kumar (translator's note: passport spelling RAJENDER KUMAR)

Tip: order all translations together. If your parents' names differ between certificates, one translator can explain this in notes across the whole set.

Why citizenship files get delayed

  1. 1Only part of the document was translated. Offices need the full document: stamps, seals, the apostille, handwritten notes and the back side. We translate all of it.
  2. 2The translation was made abroad. A translation made in your home country or by a non-sworn translator is often not enough. You can check our partner translators at justiz-dolmetscher.de.
  3. 3Your documents don't match each other. A different spelling of your father's name can raise questions. We translate the whole set together and explain differences in a note.
  4. 4Old certificates are hard to read. Faded ink, handwriting and old stamps are common. We mark unreadable parts as "illegible" instead of guessing.

How your citizenship translation works

  1. 1Upload your documents. Usually a clear scan or photo is enough. Some offices want the translator to see the original, so check your letter.
  2. 2Get your fixed price. You see the price and delivery date before you pay.
  3. 3Check your PDF. You receive the PDF of your sworn translation in 3 working days.
  4. 4Receive the signed original. We post it to your German address. It usually arrives in 1–3 working days.

Frequently asked questions about Einbürgerung translation

Do I need a sworn translation for Einbürgerung?

Yes, in most cases. Foreign-language documents for your citizenship file are normally translated by a translator sworn by a German court.

Does the Einbürgerungsbehörde accept English documents?

Some offices accept English documents, but many ask for a German translation. Check the document list your office sent you.

Can I use the translations from my PR application?

Often yes, if they are sworn German translations and your documents haven't changed. Some offices ask for new copies. Ask your caseworker.

Do I need to translate a Turkish Formül A or B for citizenship?

According to the German Embassy in Turkey, Formül A and B need neither a translation nor an apostille. Other Turkish documents, such as a Nüfus Kayıt Örneği, need an apostille and a sworn translation.

Do my Ukrainian or Russian documents need an apostille?

Usually yes. Both countries issue apostilles for their public documents. We translate the apostille together with the document.

Do I need an apostille on my Indian documents?

No. An Indian apostille is not valid in Germany. If your office needs to check an Indian document, it asks the German mission in India for a verification. You cannot start this yourself.

My Afghan or Iraqi documents cannot be legalised. What now?

The German Embassy in Kabul is closed and legalisation of Iraqi documents is suspended. Your office decides at its discretion what it accepts. A complete sworn translation helps it read the document.

How long does translation for citizenship take?

You get the PDF in 3 working days. The signed original usually arrives 1–3 working days after posting. Express is available.

Do you help with the application itself?

No. We only translate. For questions about your application, contact your Einbürgerungsbehörde or a migration counselling centre.
