Certified German Translation for Ireland: Visas and Citizenship

Last updated: 2 October 2026

Moving from Germany to Ireland? We make a certified German translation for Ireland. It is for your Irish visa, a join family application, the EU family route and, later, Irish citizenship. Irish Immigration Service Delivery asks for a full translation of any document that is not in English or Irish. Our own German–English translators translate your document. The translator then signs a statement with the four details Ireland lists. This is not a German sworn translation (beglaubigte Übersetzung), and the Irish pages do not ask for one.

  • The 4 details Irish immigration asks for: accuracy statement, date, full name and signature, contact details
  • Signed paper original by post, because Irish visa applications need hardcopy documents
  • Names kept exactly as on your document, with your passport spelling in a translator's note
  • PDF in 3 working days, signed original posted to your German address (usually 1–3 working days)

What must a certified translation for Irish immigration contain?

Irish immigration asks for a full translation, and each translation must contain four things. These are the translator's confirmation that it is accurate, the date, the translator's full name and signature, and the translator's contact details. You send it together with the German original. No German court stamp is needed.

Where to verify the translator The translator's name, signature and contact details are on the certificate. They are not on justiz-dolmetscher.de, because this is not a sworn translation.

The four details on our certificate, word for word

The Irish immigration pages for family applications list the same four points. Our signed certificate shows each of them:

  1. 1Confirmation from the translator that it is an accurate translation of the original document
  2. 2The date of the translation
  3. 3The translator's full name and signature
  4. 4The translator's contact details

We also add the translator's qualifications, attach a copy of your German document and number every page. Ireland does not list these extras, but they help the officer.

Applying for Irish citizenship later? The citizenship pages describe a slightly different certification. The translator writes "Certified to be true copy/translation of the original seen by me". Then they sign, date and print their name, and add their occupation, address and phone number. Tell us before you order if you need this wording. Because it says "original seen by me", we explain how our translator can see your original document.

German documents and EU rules: you may need less than you think

No attestation for German civil documents. Ireland says State-issued documents from the EEA or Switzerland do not need to be attested as genuine. This covers birth, marriage, death and divorce certificates. You do not need an apostille for your German Geburtsurkunde or Heiratsurkunde.

The multilingual standard form can replace a translation. Under EU rules, your Standesamt can give you a multilingual standard form (mehrsprachiges Formular) with a birth, marriage or death certificate. Ireland says a translation of these documents is not required when you provide this form. So ask your Standesamt first. It may save you the translation fee. You still need a translation for documents without such a form, like a Scheidungsurteil (divorce decree), payslips or job references.

For the EU family route (joining an EEA or Swiss citizen), Ireland also says a translation made inside the EEA or Switzerland does not need attestation by a Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Our translations are made for this. Check the checklist for your own application, because each route has its own list.

Übersetzung Deutsch Englisch for Ireland: documents we translate

Document (German name + English) Where it can come up
Geburtsurkunde (birth certificate) Join family visas for children, citizenship
Heiratsurkunde / Eheurkunde (marriage certificate) Spouse applications, the EU family route
Scheidungsurteil / Scheidungsbeschluss (divorce decree) Proof that an earlier marriage ended
Meldebescheinigung (proof of address) Proof that you lived together in Germany
Kontoauszug, Gehaltsabrechnung (bank statement, payslip) Proof of money and income
Arbeitsvertrag, Arbeitszeugnis (work contract, job reference) Work routes, proof of your job
Führungszeugnis (certificate of conduct) Only if your checklist asks for a police certificate
Zeugnis, Diplom (certificates) Study and work routes

A German Führungszeugnis is issued in German by the Bundesamt für Justiz. It can come with a multilingual form, but that form is only a translation aid. If your Irish checklist asks for a police certificate, check whether it also wants a full translation.

Irish visa applications need paper originals

Irish join family visa pages say original documents must be provided. They want hardcopy only, not USB sticks, CDs or file-sharing links. Original certificates like marriage or birth certificates are returned to you. Other papers, such as bank statements, are not returned.

So when you order a certified German translation for Ireland for a visa, our signed paper original is the right choice. Add the signed paper copy by post (+ €9) when you order. Once you are in Ireland, you register your immigration permission and receive a stamp, such as Stamp 4. For that step, follow the document list you are given.

Names, dates and places

We copy every name exactly as on your German document, letter by letter. The machine-readable line of a passport writes ß as SS. If your passport spelling differs, we add it in a translator's note.

On your document In your passport In our translation
Jana Groß JANA GROSS (machine-readable line) Jana Groß (translator's note: passport spelling JANA GROSS)

Dates are written in full, for example 2 June 2019. German place names stay in German.

How it works

  1. 1Upload your German document. Usually a clear scan or photo is enough. Some offices want the translator to see the original, so check your letter.
  2. 2Get a fixed price and a delivery date. You pay online.
  3. 3Check the draft. Tell us if a date or place looks wrong before we certify it.
  4. 4Receive your translation. You get the signed PDF by email and the signed paper original by post.

Frequently asked questions about German translations for Ireland

Do I need a sworn translator for an Irish visa from Germany?

No. The Irish pages ask for a translation with the translator's accuracy statement, the date, full name and signature, and contact details. They do not ask for a translator sworn by a German court. Check the checklist for your own application.

Do I need to translate my German birth certificate if I have the multilingual form?

Ireland says a translation of EEA birth, marriage, death or divorce certificates is not required when a multilingual standard form is provided. Ask your Standesamt for this form. If you do not have it, you need a translation.

Does my translation need an apostille for Ireland?

For German civil documents, no. Ireland says State-issued documents from the EEA or Switzerland do not need to be attested as genuine. For the EU family route, a translation made in the EEA does not need attestation by a Ministry of Foreign Affairs either.

Is a PDF enough for my Irish visa application?

Usually not. Irish visa pages ask for original documents in hardcopy, not files or USB sticks. Order our signed paper original by post and send it with your German document.

Can I use the translation for Irish citizenship later?

The citizenship pages ask for a specific certification line and the translator's occupation, address and phone number. Tell us before you order, and we add this wording. We may need to see your original document for it.

How long does it take?

The PDF comes in 3 working days, or 1 working day with express. The signed original then comes by post, usually in 1 to 3 working days. We confirm the time with your quote.

Will Irish immigration accept my translation?

Our certificate contains every detail the Irish pages list for translations. But only Irish immigration decides on your application. We cannot guarantee a decision.
